Esplora Chiado

The houses are grander and the streets are wider in Chiado, the beating heart of Lisbon’s old town. No other part of the city is quite as emblematic of Portuguese elegance as this one, yet as you explore you’ll find that the atmosphere retains an air of bohemia. A fashionable shopping district, the cobbled pedestrian streets of Rua Garrett and Rua do Carmo have the usual mix of high-street shops and designer boutiques, as well as a host of traditional bakeries and cafes. Among them, “A Brasileira" is a particular local favourite - famous for having had poet Fernando Pessoa among its loyal customers. Largo de Camões Square is a connecting focal point for the entire area and has the historic route 28 tram running right through it. The rows of noble buildings that surround it make up some of the most beautiful architecture in central Lisbon, while Chiado’s narrow side streets are a gateway to the thumping-good nightlife of Bairro Alto, simply follow the contours of Lisbon’s steep hills and you’ll get there.
